A gathering of angels appeared above my head
Sometimes an unplanned event is just the coolest thing when it all comes together just so.
Yesterday I went sailing for the very first time ever up on Lake Lanier with some friends. Of course, I use a couple of those terms lightly.
“Sailing” was mostly “sitting” as there really wasn’t much of a wind all day long. But a few times we managed to pick up over .07 knots (once or twice even getting up over 3 – whoopee!).
“I” is also kinda vague in that *I* didn’t do much of the sailing either. I did pretend to steer once or twice though… :) and I did supply the lunch of Cuban sandwiches from Publix (Hi Nancy! :waves to Nancy) and a bag of cheddar goldfish that were later used to feed some geese. Which for some reason I kept calling ducks. Julia and I amuse very easily in that we loved landing crackers on their backs so they’d peck at each other to get them.
I’m sure there’s more to say about this, but I’ll just throw up some pics this time instead. MWAH!

Sailing rocks. I used to sail out of Redondo Beach when I lived in LA with a buddy who had a 30′ Olson… we would do the “beer can” races on weekends and usually, but not always sucked… ergo the need for plenty of beer to mend our broken spirits! (or maybe that was the cause, not sure) Mind you it wasn’t soothing as all the yelling and tacking and raising and lowering sails and what not, but it didn’t suck either!
March 13th, 2007 at 6:42 amI never had before, but I can definitely see how it could become addictive. I had actually planned to go to BSH3 on Sunday for the Analversary, but I’m glad I got to do this.
I can’t imagine trying to sail drunk, though! At least not yet (disregard the beer bottles in the photos of course). ;*) A “beer can” sailing race does sound intriguing though….do tell!
March 13th, 2007 at 7:01 amAdd large ocean swells and beer, and it about evens out! You get your see legs eventually, and that’s what counts. The “Beer Can” races went around 2 points and then back across the finish line. You had to tack, fly a spinnaker, and then tack back to the finish… it could actually get a little hairy, as we sometimes had 15-20 boats. We usually had issues as we were undermanned for the size of the boat… 4 people on a 30 ‘ is tough to get everything done quickly. We’d drop the spinnaker in ocean (bad!!!!), not get the other sails up fast enough, be unprepared to tack etc…. ergo the need for lots of beer in cans!
March 13th, 2007 at 8:01 amugh, ‘frickin’ “SEA” legs….
March 13th, 2007 at 8:28 amHee! I knew what you meant (see vs. sea). If you were Paulie, I’d have mocked you mercilessly, but I’ll give you some time before I start doing that to you. ;~)
The race sounds fun, but I can’t even imagine 15-20 boats trying to do that without running into each other…especially when all their captains are schnockered!
